Business Support Manager

I joined Peterborough City Council 27 years ago as a trainee on a government scheme spending time in different department carrying out admin roles.  This was a great opportunity which allowed me visibility of different work offered by PCC prior to them offering me a permanent position.  Since then I have worked in various departments from the bottom up, as clerical officer, admin assistant, secretary, personal assistant/managers to the position I am in today, of Business Support Manager, in charge of a team of 30, and part of a management team leading the way in transforming PCC, to enable it to grow with the potential of delivering shared services externally.

I have achieved this through comprehensive training opportunities, hard work, supported by my managers who have believed in me and developed me as an employee.  I have enjoyed the challenges that my roles in PCC have offered me and also the many opportunities to undertake something different, either through secondment opportunities to further my experience and knowledge or through project work outside the scope of my role.  PCC also were able to accommodate a change in my working pattern when I had my family and were fully supportive and appreciative of my changing sitution.  I was able to continue my service on a part time basis, retain my knowledge and update my skills, whilst balancing my home life with the demands of my job.  When I returned to full time working I was able to concentrate more on my own career development which has enabled me to continue to progress.  Its great to be working for such a progressive employer and I look forward to continuing and further developing my career with PCC.

E-Communications Office

I started working for Peterborough City Council in 2004.  I began as a temp through an agency and then within a month moved to working directly as a temp for the council. Temporary roles that I have had with the council have ranged from administrative assistant to a director, to information officer for a strategic team.

For the past four years I have been working as a permanent employee in the communications team.  I am the e-communications officer so my remit includes the website, social media and e-marketing.  It is an interesting role and I have found the council to be a very supportive employer.  I started a family 3 years ago and the council were very good at being flexible during my pregnancy and when I decided to return to work part-time after the birth of my child.  The flexible working hours mean that I can work around my childcare arrangements - something which does cause worry to some employees elsewhere.

Systems Training & Support Officer

Making the decision to apply for a job with Peterborough City Council was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made!  I started in my first role of administration assistant 8 years ago.  Once I’d found my feet, I was soon given development opportunities including project work on areas of particular interest to me and acting up responsibilities. Having gained more specialised knowledge and experience, I was offered a secondment opportunity, which subsequently led to a permanent position in a job which suits me down to the ground.

Knowing that the work I do contributes towards improving the lives of Peterborough residents is a real driver for me.  Work isn’t just about coming into the office to do the 9 to 5, it’s about wanting to make a real difference.  The commitment of my colleagues in working to achieve that goal means there’s always support when you need it and a great team spirit.

And if loving my job wasn’t enough, the flexible working hours scheme means I’m able to fit my working day in with my commitments outside work, with the bonus of accruing a day of flexi leave from time to time.

Senior Waste Education Officer

I have been with PCC now for 11 years this year, working in various roles under the Environmental Sector.  I started off as the Senior Admin Officer in Environmental Services as a job share role, (before they invented the Call Centre!) managing a team to deal with all refuse and recycling issues, the introduction of the brown bins across the City and a bi-weekly collection.  During this time I was part of the team who introduced the Flare Database system across the Service and completed all the training.  After returning from maternity leave I was seconded to develop and deliver a special Government Funded project called ‘The Safety Challenge’.  I then moved across to Environmental Education, an area which I have developed and I am the Senior Waste Education Officer.  I have received a ‘Green Apple Award’ and ‘Green Hero Award’ for my Environmental Education Resource Box in 2007 and 2008 and been part of a team which have made remarkable achievements across the City linked to the Environment, by delivering large Campaigns - ‘Recycle on the Go’, ‘National Compost Week’.

I have completed 100’s of presentations to schools, associations and worked along side key partners, stakeholders, residents, businesses within Peterborough and across Cambridgeshire.  I was part of the team to deliver the communication for the crews going to a 4 day week and have recently taken on new challenges on working with the Future Job Fund and the Migration Impact Fund Projects and have received sponsorship from Coca Cola to launch ‘Recycle on the Go’.  I thrive on the commitment, enthusiasm and passion within my team and my role on environmental issues which we face in Peterborough and I also enjoy the work life balance (having two children) which I am able to have at PCC working 3 days a week but also being flexible with my workloads.  I will continue to work and develop my team and my career at PCC.
